My father wanted me to go to school, but I refused. Even though I was just a little over three years old, I resisted. It was winter, and heavy snow had fallen, making it impossible to leave the house. Nevertheless, my father insisted and used a whip to get me to go. Despite what my mother and grandmother told him, saying, &#8220;Let him go, he doesn&#8217;t want to,&#8221; it had no effect. The schoolteacher took me to school with a few lashes. There, they had installed a heater, which the people had never seen before; they called it a &#8220;Ferengi&#8221; heater. It was agreed that every child who came to school should bring a piece of firewood with them.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived there, the clergyman was sitting next to the heater, and he assigned me a spot. He was friends with my father, and his name was Mirza Abolqasem Dizani. He was originally from Taleqan but had come from Qom. Thirty years later, in Karaj, I saw him again; he was reciting eulogies. Each child had a small box with them; it was about the size of a tissue box, the kind found in every old house. Inside those boxes, children kept their pens, paper, and other items. The children didn&#8217;t take the box home with them; they left it there.<\/p>\n<p>I went to school that winter, but I didn&#8217;t learn much; the teacher didn&#8217;t make an effort to teach me much, and I was just a little over three years old. I remember one day during a break, the teacher brought his feet forward, hit my back, and lifted me up; he was just joking with me. During the time I was there, he had only taught me a couple of lines of poetry. The following year, the teacher left, and the school was closed. The year after that, a literate person from Dorvan reopened the school; his name was Molla Reza Goodarzi. While we were in the enclosure, they used to come to our house. There, I learned a few lines of poetry and some reading to a certain extent.<\/p>\n<p>In the old days, schoolhouses primarily focused on teaching reading skills so that people could read the Quran; that was their main objective. My mother also knew how to read the Quran; she had learned it in the schoolhouse. Most people went to school for this reason. At the end of that winter, the same year, we moved to Karaj, and the schoolhouse was closed. I started working in the shop.
