On one of those occasions, we went to a nearby village named Pishenbor. It was noon, and I was hungry; I told my father we should find a place to eat; he pointed to a house and suggested we go there. Initially, I thought the homeowner was an acquaintance of my father’s, but he wasn’t. The door was open, we said “ya Allah” as we entered, and a woman came to the door. My father asked, “Sister, is the man of the house here?” She replied, “The man is not home, but the house is yours to enter”; meaning, you’re welcome. We went inside; by the time we settled our loads and took care of the animals, her husband arrived. It turned out that he and his brother were among the notables of that village; they were herders; his brother owned a thousand cows. Once inside, the lady of the house added wood to the stove and then baked bread; there were four of us, and she baked four loaves of bread. It seemed their cow had recently calved; since the weather was very cold, they had brought the newborn calf inside the room, lying next to the stove.

Back then, people made the most of what they had; it wasn’t like they would leave a lamp on unnecessarily until morning; as soon as their work was done, they would immediately turn off the lamp.

Gradually, we got to know each other and started conversing; they talked about the oppressions of Reza Shah; by then, he had fled, and people were enjoying their freedom. The story was that Reza Shah, after suppressing the tribes in the south, which was about seven or eight years before that time, had confiscated their sheep; government agents had brought the flocks to Kelardasht, giving each family fifty sheep and taking receipts. The people of Kelardasht were responsible for taking care of the sheep; at the end of the year, a representative from the court would come and take a quart of oil for each sheep. The man said, “They had given us a hundred sheep, and at the end of the year, they wanted a quart of oil for each; when we said some had died, they told us to make sure they didn’t die; we said out of a hundred, thirty were males, which didn’t produce milk for us to make oil, but they didn’t care, and their count remained the same.” According to him, anyone who didn’t provide the oil would be whipped by the gendarmes.

There were positive developments at that time, but mostly executed with force and pressure; the officers were very oppressive; they exploited the people in every way possible, both sexually and financially; the people didn’t dare to speak up. This was more prevalent in the north because Reza Shah was from the north himself and had registered all the villages there in his own name.

    Prevprevoius storySweet grapes, precious shoes

    next storyDrop the load!Next

When we were in Kelardasht, sometimes my father would come to visit us.
