Indeed, during the First World War, all its oil was extracted and taken away, which was one of the reasons for their success.<\/p>\n<p>They had no oil, and it had not yet been discovered in the Middle East; it was available in America and in the Caucasus region (Azerbaijan), which the Russians were utilizing. The Germans tried to reach it but couldn&#8217;t. Iran&#8217;s oil was discovered before Saudi Arabia&#8217;s. D&#8217;Arcy obtained the concession from the Qajars on May 28, 1901, but didn&#8217;t make much use of it; after a while, he transferred it to the British government; subsequently, the Anglo-Persian Oil Company was established; in fact, they started the drilling operations.<\/p>\n<p>Reza Shah burned the D&#8217;Arcy concession document and replaced it with another contract in 1933. He managed to slightly increase the ownership rights, but on the other hand, he opened the oil valves, and they took as much as they could.<\/p>\n<p>In 1949, Mosaddeq objected to that contract and the struggle to nationalize the oil industry intensified. We were not concerned with the minor adjustments to the concession rights; we were fighting to annul the contract and nationalize the oil entirely; Mosaddeq had proposed this in the 14th parliament, and it was approved. We gave many lives in those struggles; my face was completely injured; shrapnel covered under my eyelids, cheeks, and all over my face, so much so that blood reached my shoes.<\/p>\n<p>Our struggles continued until August 19, 1953; on this date, the royal court staged a coup.<\/p>\n<p>After the coup, knowing my involvement in leftist activities, I was sure I would be arrested; so, I sent a message to my uncle in the village, &#8220;Come here, there are things to take to my mother.&#8221; I had bought some provisions; I loaded them on a donkey and, as I was telling my uncle about the possibility of my arrest, the officers came and arrested me; he was quite shocked by the scene. It was customary that whoever was arrested was first taken to the police station, severely beaten, and then sent to detention. To avoid being beaten, I decided to resist and create a commotion in Karaj square; people quickly gathered; coincidentally, the military commander of Karaj was nearby, saw the gathering, and came to see what was happening; I told him, &#8220;I&#8217;m not a thief to be taken to the police station; I&#8217;m a political prisoner; I won&#8217;t go&#8221;; he asked, &#8220;Will you come with me?&#8221; I agreed; he drove me to the gendarmerie in Karaj.
