I asked, “Who are the veterans in this ward?” and was directed to their cell. I approached them saying, “You are the experienced ones here, why don’t you do something about this environment? Everyone seems despondent.” They replied, “There’s nothing we can do.” I then shared my plan with them, seeking their support and collaboration. I aimed to establish order and bring life back to the ward.

Names of inmates were listed on the wall; I divided them into groups of seven. We agreed that each day, one group would take responsibility for the entire ward, including food and hygiene, freeing up the rest to engage in educational and leisure activities.

We pooled money to acquire necessary items, arranged a long table for everyone, one towel per person, and so on. Early in the morning, we would lay the table in the middle of the ward, everyone would sit, and the seven responsible for the day would serve breakfast. Immediately after, educational classes were organized in various groups and levels, for the illiterate, the educated, etc. Those seven would then prepare lunch. After lunch, there was a brief rest, followed by entertainment and sports activities; one played the harmonica, another made chess pieces out of dough, and so on.

Another of our initiatives was caring for the sick. Some political prisoners came from affluent families and had food brought from home daily; we decided to give this food to the sick inmates, while the rest ate the prison’s food equally. We also planned to assist the families of prisoners who were financially struggling; a renewed spirit was noticeable in the ward. Inmates from other wards came to see our order and programs. One day, a picture of the Shah was installed in our ward; we realized a plan was in place. My guess was they intended to tear the photo and then use it as a pretext to mistreat the prisoners. To prevent this, we stationed a guard by the photo, who changed shifts.

One night, we were awakened by noise; the guard was being beaten for allegedly tearing the photo of His Majesty; he was taken away. We gathered to find a way to free him, realizing the only option was to discreetly pay, as legal means were futile. We collected money and tasked a disabled engineer inmate with the job, thinking his disability might increase his chances of success; indeed, it worked, and he returned to the ward.

Those days are among my sweetest memories; they exemplify turning life’s hardships into joy.

I was released in 1954. The situation was such that struggle seemed futile; in a short period, close to a thousand people had been executed, including our best officers; I saw their execution pictures in the newspaper while in prison. Meanwhile, the Americans had taken control here, and the Russians provided no support; global politics did not back us. Powers had reconciled, dividing the world among themselves; We became the reason of reconciliation. The struggle was pointless; I quit political activity and went back to business.

    Prevprevoius storyOil

    Next StoryContract no contractNext

I entered the prison to find a somber atmosphere.
