The profit they expect to accumulate over years can be compensated in a single transaction. We saved for several years; back when money held more value, we managed to save around five hundred thousand tomans. During this time, the owner of the property I was renting wanted to sell it. I advised against it, telling him, “This property is valuable and useful, let it be!” He said, “I plan to buy somewhere in Tehran and want to sell this place to you.” Again, I offered, “If you’re upset with me, I’ll leave, but don’t sell it!” He insisted, “It’s in our best interest to sell it to you.” It was agreed that his brother in Tehran would set the price; I had valued it at one thousand tomans per meter. Based on this, we drafted a pre-agreement and I wrote the check; his brother valued it at seven hundred and fifty tomans per meter. Eventually, we went to the notary, and I purchased the property.

Without cash, I couldn’t have done it; the money that had been sitting in the bank for years yielded multiple returns in one day; the entire property cost around seven hundred thousand tomans in total; I had previously purchased its key money for eighteen thousand tomans. However, I later sold just a small part of it for about three hundred million tomans. Old-time merchants believed a merchant’s capital is divided into three parts; one-third should be cash, one-third should be working capital, i.e., goods, and one-third should be receivables. A merchant engaged in buying and selling in the market should not be empty-handed nor in debt; a debtor merchant loses their capital during a crisis. A merchant with liquidity is sharp, debt-free, and can transact in the market, offer credit; other merchants know they have the means and their checks won’t bounce. A market merchant should never empty their hands. However, this rule does not apply to all kind of businesses, for example, those active in real estate must quickly convert money into property; otherwise, their money diminishes in value, becoming worthless.

Choosing a profession requires consideration of several factors; trade and business worldwide have four conditions; anyone entering this field should consider them. The first condition for starting a business is interest; without love and passion, and merely on someone’s advice, one cannot start a business. The second is expertise; without expertise and mastery, and if one relies on others to do the job, the outcome is uncertain; I succeeded in the fruit distribution business and as a market operator because I was skilled in it.

Understanding the capacities of a trade is the third condition; for example, if someone wants to start a shipping company, they must have sufficient capital; it’s not feasible with just one or two million tomans. Without enough capital, a merchant or trader ends up dedicating their earnings to pay off installments to the bank; the economic capacity of a trade requires backing. The fourth condition is honesty and integrity in work; when deceit, fraud, and lies are involved, the business ends in disrepute and failure. Observing these four conditions ensures success in one’s endeavors.

    Prevprevoius storyKickback money or robbery.

    Next StoryIts effect lasts foreverNext

A merchant should always have cash on hand; they should not only think about the interest it could earn.
