Among the merchants, only two or three others, besides my father, had children around my age. There was a canal nearby, which had been dammed to collect water for the Kalaak area and beyond. During summers, other children and I would go to the riverbank to swim. On our way back, the sands around the river would burn our feet; the sun would heat them up significantly. The riverbed area later became Chamran Park.

I used to think to myself, “If there were gardens here, it would be so nice; we could return in the shade.” Time passed; in 1939, while we were in Baraghan, I dreamt of this area; I saw a large garden with many trees. At that time, except for the sugar factory, the college, and Haydarabad, nowhere else in Karaj had electricity; only governmental places had electricity. We didn’t have electricity, but we knew what it was; interestingly, the garden in my dream had electricity. This dream stayed in my mind; in 1966, we were living in the Hesar area of Karaj. The mayor at the time was Mr. Baha. One night, he and a few council members were our guests; I suddenly remembered that dream and shared it with them. I said, “Let’s help plant trees here.” They replied, “It’s not possible; this area doesn’t have soil suitable for planting. Moreover, Haj Velayati is sieving the entire area on the other side, selling its sand. The place is full of holes and not capable of cultivation.” I said, “Then do something else; the orchard owners around are slowly encroaching upon this area. Draw a canal to delineate the boundary of this area from the orchards, so they can’t encroach.” They again said, “Let’s think and see what can be done.” I replied, “You don’t need to think; give me four workers, and I’ll do it myself.” They agreed to my proposal. The next morning, they gave me four workers along with some shovels and picks; I also took a saw with me. We dug a canal starting from under the Karaj Bridge. A local family had an orchard there; we got permission to cut several branches from their willow trees and planted them alongside the canal. Those trees remained there for many years. In short, we built the canal and planted the trees within a week or two, and the task was completed.

    Prevprevoius storyThese beloved ones

    Next StoryGod hears his soundNext

In our first migration to Karaj, my father bought the lease for a shop on Qazvin Street and started his business; back then, there were about twenty shops in that area.
