Every family should be familiar with its past and preserve it in their memories. When individuals know their past, they tend to adhere more to social principles; those who are unaware of their past tend to live carelessly and have fewer commitments.

World War I began in 1914 and ended in 1918. After the war, a pandemic and famine spread across Iran, causing many people to die. For example, in our village, “Dorvan,” two sons of my great-grandfather Kabolakbar, named Reza and Mirza, died. In the family of Reza, who was my grandfather, all four sons died, and only my father and my aunt remained.

During those times, infectious diseases were thrown into the river, believing that the water would compensate for the body’s fluid loss, and the sick person would survive. My father described that period, saying, “When I was a child, before my father passed away, we went to Karaj, taking our livestock and belongings. We stayed there for a while and then returned. Karaj was a deserted center with agriculture. In the old municipality area, there was a land where they cultivated alfalfa.”

He continued, “The epidemic had not reached Dorvan yet, but it had affected Karaj. When we returned, I saw people sleeping on alfalfa; I asked my father, ‘Why are they sleeping here?’ He said they are dead, they ate alfalfa out of hunger, and they burst.” Fresh alfalfa is delicious, and cows and sheep eat a lot of it. It produces gas in the intestines, causing diarrhea if consumed excessively. Those people, due to extreme hunger, had eaten a lot and burst.

“My father said, ‘We went to a garden in Karaj. We gave a sheep, and in return, we received four measures of wheat and brought them to Dorvan. We ground the wheat into flour and baked bread. We ate a little bread with a large piece of cheese, substituting cheese for bread since there was no wheat. Sometimes, when some people from Karaj came to the village, they were so poor that they slept in the stable at night. Sometimes, when we made cheese, they took the whey and ate it.'”

My paternal grandfather and his brother had passed away before their father, so the inheritance did not belong to my father and his cousins anymore. However, Kabolakbar, their grandfather, had bequeathed that his grandsons inherit instead of their fathers. The heirs, my father’s aunts, were not burdened with the inheritance, indicating that the grandfather had significant wealth from livestock, orchards, and land. Local people also supported the aunts.

In the end, with the help of my father’s uncle and some others, they complained to the religious authority (Mujtahid). Mr. Oveisie says, “The will must be executed.” They were forced to implement it, and the inheritance was divided. A share went to my father, a share to his cousins, and the rest to his aunts. Local people mostly allocated two-thirds of the property to the aunts, ensuring they didn’t remain empty-handed. These lands we have today are the same inheritance.

    next storyThe EldersNext

I am aware of my family history, spanning several generations, in terms of lineage and ancestry.
