He was a very calm man and rarely got involved in any discussions. For instance, if they asked for his opinion on a certain matter, he would say that whatever the elders decide, he would never express his opinion. Or, for example, if they said, ‘Karbalai is supposed to contribute one toman each time for such and such,’ he would give two tomans.

He was always at the forefront of charitable work. Gat-Agha had herds of sheep and goats and, as a result, his house was entirely carpeted. In our childhood, there were no carpets in the villages; people had rugs and felt. At that time, there were three types of carpets based on size: they were called ‘medium,’ ‘side,’ and ‘spread.’ Houses were not standardized; everyone built a house for themselves with undefined dimensions. Therefore, they used small carpets that were usable. Those who had large houses filled the middle with medium carpets and the sides with side and spread carpets. Gat-Agha’s house was very large, only having four or five doors; the entire house was covered with carpets.

It also had a very large table where everyone sat around during meals. At that time, nobody had tables in their houses; there was only one chair, specifically for the clergy during mourning days. My grandfather was very religious and pious, and he had great respect for religious scholars. There was a cleric named Sheikh Davood Shahidi in Baraghan, whom I hadn’t seen, but my grandfather held him in high regard. He used to say that Sheikh Davood went on pilgrimage to one of the nearby Imamzadehs every year, spent the night there, and then returned to Baraghan. According to my grandfather, once when he returned to Baraghan after his pilgrimage, they spread a carpet on one of the rooftops, and the elders gathered there.

At midnight, the roosters crowed all at once, which was unusual because roosters usually crow at dawn. People were surprised by this and asked Sheikh Davood about it. He said that this was the last time he came to Baraghan; the roosters informed him, and he had to bid farewell. It happened just as he said, and a few months later, he passed away. Gat-Agha saw Sheikh Davood’s death in his dream; in the morning, he slaughtered two fat sheep, set out for Baraghan, and upon arrival, he found that Sheikh Davood had indeed passed away.”

    Prevprevious storyThe Elders

next storyWhat are you looking for?Next

I was about eighteen years old when my parents passed away; Karbalai Ghulam Ali, whom we called ‘Gat-Agha,’ meaning grandfather.
